Can someone explain the difference between a imodel file and a IFC file? please

Good Morning,

Can someone explain to me what the difference is between a imodel file and a IFC file, please?  I assume that the IFC file (when the details have been hammered out) will be a file format that can be exchanged between different CADD software, like Land XML, am I correct?  But IFC will be a step above Land XML, it will have more information and intended to contain a 3d model, right?  But will it be as detailed as a "imodel", or will it be more or less?

From what I understand the IFC model is still being ironed out between industry and the standards organization, so there are no details yet.  I'm just trying to get a better handle on how they compare to one another.

Thanks, and have a Good Holidays Folks,

USA retirement of US Survey Feet and the roll out of new Datums, question?

$

Good Morning All,

To be upfront, I'm not a survey or geodetic expert at all, I'm in CADD Support.

But I've heard talk about the USA's current unit of measure being switched on January 1, 2022 to International Feet.  When that happens I assume it will not be a big concern for Civil designers because Bentley CADD software can easily change units in a dgn and scale, even when references are in different units of measure its software can adjust for it.  Am right, right?  It's not going to be more complicated than switching the units from "Survey Feet" to "International Feet" right, I don't believe the "International Foot" is being redefined, correct?

But once we add the additional change of the Datum being changed as well in 2025, it still shouldn't be a big deal for Civil designers because again Bentley software can do the translation automatically.  But what can we expect from Bentley to help with this change, is Bentley going to provide:

  • Can we expect to get a new Geo Coordinate Systems from Bentley (dty file I presume)?
  • And the use of International Feet should be as easy as it has been using Survey Feet?

From my limited understanding I believe 99% of the effort of switching from Survey Feet to International Feet will be on the surveyors, they will need to change settings in their data collection systems to the new units and then the new coordinate system, right?

Thanks for your help,

PowerGeopak menu bar not showing

I just installed PowerGeopak SS10. The menu bar is not loading properly. It's only showing PowerGeopak on the menu bar. I don't see file, element, tools, etc. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it. I even uninstalled open roads connection as well. And reinstalled it. I have reached out to Bentley support and they have not come up with a solution either. I'm including an image on here as well. Has anyone else ever seen this type of issue. This is the only computer in our office that seems to have this issue.

Integrating background maps into 3D model

We developped a 3D model of "Intercahnges project" with open roads (including modelling bridges with open bridge modeler).

We could not integrate the backgrounfd map ("bing map" in open roads did not allow us to clip the part of map we need).

If we have " 3D google clipped maps" (by purchasing them), coul we integrate them to our Bentley model (dgn file) ?

If yes, how to integrate them ?

Thanks.

Any way to retrieve my plan view after Plan and Profile creation?

$

BRAND New ORD user... Today I created an alignment with stations, then an existing surface from contours, then I created a profile with existing c/l left and right offsets and a proposed alignment with curvature and such. I even mastered a new template which was very easy BTW. LOVED it! I even labeled my stations all in my very first official day not knowing nothing this morning. Was unsuccessful in dropping my template into my corridor but decided to move on to save that for another day...

The next thing I tried was to create a Plan and profile sheet. I'm so new I could not tell you much of what I did besides designate a boundary with my offsets and such and toggled to create a sheet. Now I can't get back to my plan view. I've tried all the models in View Attributes but none were of my base file plan view. Was I supposed to save a view for my plan view? I saved the profile view and can open it but not my plan view. I see my drawing is rather large (6,900 kb). So I know my work is still in it.

My drawing originated from a V8I-3D file saved down to a V7-3D and then converted using ORD. Seems to be the only way I can convert my projects now. And may very well be the reason I can't get back to my plan view now as far as I know?

I also learned the reason there's so many layers in ORD.

Any help would be appreciated but I'm done for the day. But I'm marking today off as a very successful day learning ORD. I could probably recreate my work in 1/3 day if needed tomorrow to get back to where I was before trying to create a plan and profile, save it up somewhere and then play some more.

Many thanks,

Jeremy

Label Spot Grade of a Design Terrain

Hi All,

Does anyone know if there is a way to label a single "spot grade" on a design terrain?  Basically I'm looking for something similar to the tool "Label Terrain Spots" or "Label Terrain Contours" (image below) but instead I would like it to place a little arrow symbol with the grade % at that specific location (image below).

Thanks in advance!

Locking a DGN file

I need to lock a dgn file so that no one can open the file to make changes to it without my knowledge.  I know you can password protect the file but i want to still be able to reference the file.  I tried password protecting the file but when i open a file that has the locked file reference into it, it now asks for the password which defeats the whole purpose of locking the file.  I still want to use the file as a reference but don't want anyone to make change to that file.

Is there a way to lock the file but still be able to use it as a reference file?  This is in SS10

Utility Properties

Hi,

I am creating a text favorite which will be used to annotate a Storm Pipe.  When creating the text favorite and I'm prompted to select the pipe properties to be included, there seems to be some issues.

Length (Construction) seems to be the pipe length in Plan view, which matches the DeltaX value when I check the properties for the pipe in the profile view, but I want it to label the "Actual" pipe length which I assume to be the length shown in the properties form the profile view.  However, this value doesn't show up in the properties for the actual pipe.  Instead, I'm given the options of Length (3D) & Length (Unified) which give a different value for pipe length than the value given in the Profile properties.

The same issue occurs regarding the Slope.  I want my label to display the correct slope of the pipe.  I am only able to choose Slope (Calculated) for my text favorite, but this does not match the actual slope of the pipe as seen in profile view.

Please see the image below where I highlighted all the different values. (Image on the left is the field editor where I can choose properties to add for the text favorite)(Image on the right shows the properties from profile view)

In summary, can anyone advise on which properties I should be choosing when creating a text favorite to be used to annotate the True Length & True Slope of a pipe.  The true length and true slope should have the same value (annotation) when annotated in plan & profile.  I am not sure why the properties are giving literally 4 different lengths and 2 different slopes to choose from.  I just want the True values (ie. how long of a pipe needs to be purchased, and what the slope is for final construction)

It should also be noted that when creating a text favorite, it does not allow you to choose the slope property from the profile view.  It seems like my only option is to choose the Slope (calculated) value, which is the wrong value.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I am making a corridor for a road with parking, sidewalk.

However, i get stuck in the position without parking lot, the curbs turn with 90 degree.

I tried making a Point control horizontal alignment, however, it goes wrong.

How can we keep it follow correctly at those positions?

I am not really proficient in ORD, so i welcome sharing from you all.

New to MIcrostation, need help developing/understanding LIB

$

This isn't related to OpenRoads. The survey firm I work for recently got Microstation PowerSurvey V8i (SelectSeries10), I am trying to understand how LIB files work with the software and how it integrates into the company's custom template that I am trying to develop (preset layers, lineweights, linetypes, etc.). I am also trying to understand how points (nodes in AutoCAD) are imported and how to create codes for survey figures and their properties. If their is any literature on LIBs and how their created I would love to see it. Thanks

Terrain model edition issue

I processed a DTM in Openroads Designer Connect (ORD Connect 10.07),  from survey data (points & survey chains). My DTM has a feature definition (DTM_ex).

I turned ON (in the (Surface Properties) my DTM triangles to visualize them. Everything good at this point,

After a first edition of my DTM (deleting bad triangles in the exterior), the DTM Triangles get all turned OFF. I have to go back to properties to turn them back ON, in order to continue my editions.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.
