RE: [OR] How to construct a line perpendicular to one alignment and tangent to another alignment?

Well I'll be. I could swear I tried that and it didn't work, but I tried it this morning and it worked fine. I guess until I find that it doesn't work in whatever scenario, I'll consider that the answer.

Edit:

I'm using Geopak SS4 .872.

I find that works when you're dealing with simple curves and lines, or even interval elements.

Here's a couple contrary observations, all using Line Between Points, and using AccuSnap, having done a tangent or parallel snap to a complex element:

  • Moving the cursor over a simple line shows the perpendicular icon where the snap would be, and the yellow X icon indicating a valid snap point, but instead of constructing a parallel line, it behaves as a near-point snap, not the parallel snap we would expect using a Microstation tool.
  • Trying a perpendicular snap does not show the yellow X, it shows near-point snap icon with a bold circle and crossbar indicating that it is invalid, and a tooltip states "Element not valid for tool". To be clear, this is an simple (non-complex) civil ruled line that is longer than it need to be in order to find a valid solution.
    • This same exact behavior is observed when hovering over arc elements as well.
  • All other snaps seem to behave just as expected.

Unfortunately we don't have access to the simple elements that compose a complex element.

I upgraded my PowerGEOPAK to the latest version and still had the issue occur with crashing. Here is my DGN file for you to test. I'm wondering if there is a setting within ProjectWise or a configuration variable within Microstation that I don't have turned on that needs to work with ProjectWise?

OpenRoads and ProjectWise

To whom it may concern,

Has anyone had any issues using ProjectWise and OpenRoads technology together? My company and I are making the transition to this and I have run into some issues using OpenRoads.

The biggest issue so far is being able to "Export to Native" GPK file. When I work on the job off of ProjectWise this isn't an issue, but when I do work on ProjectWise and try to use this tool my Microstation freezes up and I have to close out every single time. The weird part is that I can "Import from GPK file" and make edits that way in my design file. But I can't export to my GPK if I make any changes. It's forcing me, as a work-around, to do all my geometry through the old legacy tools through Geopak.

Does anyone know what the potential issues could be? This is a really big inconvenience because I want to make my edits using OpenRoads and export after I've done a thorough analysis if my design will work.

If anyone has any information to fix this issue or a better work-around, please let me know!

Thanks,

Jonathon Williams

If I remember correctly (with my install), the CIVIL_SUPERELEVATION_RULES_DIRECTORY variable (expanded) pointed to
'C:\ProgramData\Bentley\Civil\Standards\8.11.9\en\Superelevation\SRL' - which is incorrect. I needed to edit the variable to add '\UK' to it (amend to '\India' etc. as required). It was pointing to the parent folder, not the folder containing the actual files.

Hello Sir/ Madam,

While I am Carrying out Rule Based Superelevation, it is not showing Superelevation Rules Files however SRL and SEP files are already there at the location. I am Currently using MX ROAD Select Series 4.  Kindly help me with this ASAP.

I am not sure I can completely follow what you are trying to accomplish with the profile. Are you ultimately trying to lock in the grade of the profile line and have it extend to the intersection point? If you are using the Profile Line Between Points, it will establish the start and end points and the manipulators on the line will be for the length and slope. Can you pick up the arrow on the length manipulator and adjust the end of the line until it intersects with the profile gradeline or gets to a station you desire?

Or if you are using another tool to establish a base vertical you can use that as a template for creating a new profile using the Vertical Geometry tools.

I don't believe I have seen the explorer revert to being shown when switching files.  This should be stored in the registry.

One suggestion is to delete the DialogPOS folder in the registry to see if you can get it cached.  Close out of PowerCivil, the go to Start > Run > regedit : HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Bentley\InRoadsGroup\Applications\Version 8.11.9\DialogPos and delete the DialogPOS folder.  This will reset all sizes and locations of the dialogs with PowerCivil.  For a more detailed process, see 'Solution2' in the following wiki:

It keeps popping up and I have to switch if off with Explorer/show hide every time I open a new file. Save settings have no effect.

I can pick up the arrow and adjust it, but if I use Civil Accudraw to assign it the station 27+30, it will be at least the slightest bit off unless I also assign the elevation perfectly. And I can assign the elevation perfectly only by computing it myself, which I feel that OpenRoads tools should be able to handle.

Instead of relying on Civil Accudraw to place the terminus directly, I can use Civil Accudraw and use the Microstation tool Place Line to do a vertical line at station 27+30, and then use the Microstation tool Extend to Element. But I feel that that's using Microstation tools for something that OpenRoads tools should be able to handle.

[OR] [CR] Profile tie solutions

I have a profile from a surface. I want to tie to this profile line with proposed elements. I construct a very short profile segment from the tie point to the next point outside the tie location, in order to establish the grade that the tie will come in. (This is a forward grade, in my current case.)

The most obvious solution is to extend this element to station 27+30, for example. I type that station in for the beginning point. Instead of running along the established grade, it just shifts the location of the beginning and maintains the elevation.

The next most obvious solution is to construct a profile line using Tangent Profile Line From Element. I select the forward grade line. At the prompt for vertical offset, I respond with 0. I locate the station where I want my VPI: station 27+30. I figure that surely it will pass through the points establishing the forward grade, so I click without regard to actual elevation. The resultant construction is a line that starts at the elevation that my datapoint provided, and the line is parallel to the forward grade but not at the correct elevation.

I've tried doing a variation on Profile Line Between Points. I selected the first tie point, then told it that I want the length to be -5 feet long (that is, in the direction of the profile being tied), then selected the second point. The grade is the same, but now the element is only 5 feet. Now, I want to set the station of the lower-station point to my VPI station 27+30. The only way to do this without taking extraneous steps using Microstation (not Civil) linework is to use Civil Accudraw. I bring that up, click the arrow to establish how long this line should be, I enter 27+30, and then the longitudinal location changes according to the elevation of my cursor.

While I can manually calculate the elevation of the VPI, or I can manually calculate the distance to the VPI, or construct the VPI by using a Microstation line that is set vertically at the station and use the Microstation Extend To Element tool, I would think the solution should easily fall within OpenRoads' wheelhouse. Is there any tool I'm missing?

I tested your file in my ProjectWIse with the latest version and it worked fine. We have full control of our ProjectWise storage locations and can read and write with out issue. Do you control the folder access within projectwise? Can another user log in and perform the export to gpk function or do they also have an issue?

[PowerCivil SS4] Place civil geometry without saving snaps

Hi.

I am trying to place a Complex by PI geometry by snapping to existing elements, but I do not want my snaps or existing geometry included as dependencies. How can I use snap and still get a "dead" geometry? And is there any tool for editing existing snap dependencies?

Jonathon - We are having a similar issue when exporting to Native. We receive a Microsoft.Net framework error. Detailed as "The given path’s format is not supported". IF I place the .prj and .gpk files on my local machine; I have no issue exporting to Native.

I have logged a change request for this issue: Enhancement 537188:Allow users to base a derived element on a simple element within a complex element.

[CR] [OR] Allow users to base a derived element on a simple element within a complex element

I have a complex element that I want to drop complex on, because I'm about to form a new complex element that includes these elements, but I don't want a complex element that includes another complex element which finally comprises simpler elements. So I drop complex. The unfortunate thing is, now an element that is derived from that complex element is broken. So I undo that operation and then see if I can change the reference to one of the simple elements. I find that it is impossible to select a simple element within a complex element.

I guess the workaround is to set an entirely different element to replace it, then drop complex, then switch it back.

Horizontal Geometry - Copy Element w/o Rules

I have our Model referenced into a 2D file. I am trying use the Horizontal Geometry - Copy Element tool w/o rules to copy Ditch Lines, Edges of Pavement, Back of Curbs, etc from our model to copy the linework into a 2D file for plan production. Every time I try it blows up on me and kicks me out of Microstation. Here are properties of just a ditch line for an example:

Complex Element: LTO-DITCH-BK

Belongs To: US75_3

Feature: Ditch Flow Lines

Active Profile: ProfileBy Template

Level: RD Ditch Flow Lines

Ref: 2 (PW_WORKDIR:d0160114\212090cf_model.dgn)

SUDA Bug - Geometry rules are lost after making a utility line

$

See attached video.

  1. Create Geometry which includes snap rules.  In the video it is simply two lines with the end snapped.  But the same is true for all geometry snap rules.
  2. The geometry behaves correctly as pure geometry
  3. Now make a utility conduit from the geometry.
  4. The snap rules are either lost or ignored, because editing the geometry after creation of the conduit does not update the second line which depends on the snap rule.
  5. Workaround is very difficult because the manipulators are also lost at the ends of the line.  The only known workaround is to open the geometry in element information panel and copy/paste XY coordinates to the ends of the second line.

SUDA Bug - when place a node on a conduit with split, the trench is turned off

$

See attached video which shows:

  1. A utility line exists and is modeled with a trench
  2. Add a node using the method "By Conduit With Split"
  3. After the node is placed, the trench has been turned off and must be reset.
  4. Workaround: workaround is pretty simple UNLESS there have been edits made to the trench. These edits must be redone after turning the trench property back on.
