Robin, in my opinion, the only 'safe' version of InRoads is SS2. (But that could be considered subjective.) I would be curious if anyone felt SS3 was "safer" than SS4 which has the latest bug fixes. What is this person's 'reasoning' as to why they want to go back to SS3? Other than an 'invisible' file format enhancement, SS4 is essentially an improved version of SS3.

I was asked to upgrade all the computers from their current version of InRoads to version 08.11.09.872en.  I'm sure they all had different versions on their computers.  Now, I was told by the same person that he doesn't want the 872 version (SS4) and needs to go back to SS3.  Which version can I safely rollback to?

RE: [OR] [CR] Templates: unexpected recursive constraint with Vector-Offset

Okay, first, just try to diagram out what you are trying to do, and you’ll see there is obviously more to it.

The recursive condition is caused by the ETW being controlled by the position of EP and at the same time the EP is attempting to be controlled by the position of ETW. You can see the circular reference on the right side between the last two template points.

And while you might have always considered that a V-O constraint with the Offset = 0.00 is shorthand for a Slope Constraint, it’s not, otherwise it wouldn’t exist (or have two Parents instead of one), so there is obviously more to that constraint that you are not considering. That’s the “fundamental flaw”. In InRoads SS2-speak, for example, placing two PI’s with the Curve Set tools can create a tangent, but the Horizontal Element command to place a Fixed Line does the same thing with two points …therefore are they essentially the same command? No, they’re not …even though the results are similar. One method is much more sophisticated than the other. And you also know this ‘recursive’ limitation exists in Target Aliasing too.

I’m sure Bentley could probably program the software to address this in the constraints by developing some sort of priority in the calculation of the point locations relative to the “Constraint network”. For instance, Excel has the capability to address circular calculations by defining a finite number of iterations. But that would just add even more complexity to the software, and it’s not something that can’t be solved with a NULLPoint.

Probably the best technical explanation of this would come from someone at Bentley, like Denis Schaffer.

Set the "CIVIL_ROADWAY_TEMPLATE_LIBRARY" variable to path of *.itl you want to open by default. We store our default templates for each project in the project's folder on our network.

I have Power InRoads SS4 and am unable to load the .itl file in the project file open dialog. I don't see the .itl extension in teh file type options despite the fact that I have set up the projects defaults to include the folder containing the .itl files.Online help indicated that the template file will not be available until the create template Library is initated.

Could someone please let me know what I am missing becasue I can't find any command that will allow me to start the process.

Also, there is a MicroStation version and an InRoads version. InRoads Ss2 runs on MicroStation Ss3, so you need to determine which version they really mean.

But from my understanding, Mark is correct. Its InRoads Ss2 or Ss4, and I still believe some Ss4 items are still not ready for production.

I have no access to that, as I'm not an InRoads user.

So I'm looking at your diagram and I'm trying to sort it out:

 • I guess V-O P1 and V-O P2 are pointing at each parent of the V-O constraint.
 • I guess the Hs represent the horizontal constraints.
 • I guess the Ss represent the slope constraint parent and the controls on the slope.
 • I guess the green linework represents the constraints applied to ETW.
 • I guess the orange linework represents the constraints applied to EP.

Your drawing for the "WORKS" side shows that the horizontal constraint on EP is from CL. In fact that is the only difference I see between the left and right. (Please correct me if I'm wrong in failing to observe any other details.)

More accurately, my observation is that even when I have an H constraint on EP-L to locate it 2' left of ETW-L, I get an error only if I'm using a V-O constraint. I get no error message when having the H constraint on EP-L from ETW-L, as long as ETW-L is located with a slope constraint instead of V-O.
I realize that for any "shorthand tool" (as I'm using the term) you don't necessarily get the exact same results in any arbitrary situation. Perhaps some pseudocode of what's happening with a slope constraint and what's happening with a vector-offset constraint could help me see why I should expect a recursive constraint problem with one but not the other.

The process of computing the slope on which ETW is located using the slope constraint, I expect the system to find the x,y coordinates for each of EP and find CL, then figure out a generalized line so that for any x, y will be ax+b. Simple enough. The x is provided elsewhere by the horizontal constraint (in this case) or possibly none at all (in an arbitrary case).

The process of computing the line on which ETW is located using the vector-offset constraint (using 0' for this application, though we also have to consider the arbitrary case), I expect the system to find the x,y coordinates for each of EP and find CL, then use linear algebra (or other application of matrices and vectors--it's been a while since I've studied this sort of math) to translate this ray (to the left or to the right of itself) X feet. Again, the lateral positioning is provided elsewhere by the horizontal constraint (in this case) or possibly none at all.

So, once again: Do I have a fundamental flaw in applying logic here?

Now what it comes down to is; When I went to install the upgrades/updates that were requested, ir081109872en needed the prerequisite of ms081109832en. When I ran both, they automatically un-installed the previous versions of SS3. The Supervisor also wanted Bentley Map bm081109713en which needed ms081109829en and mssdk081109829en which of course uninstalled the previous version of MS. Now after clarification from the Supervisor, he wants SS4 of both MS and IR to be installed simultaneously with SS3 of both. Is that possible? His reasoning is: "Also we need to keep the previous version of the Inroads suite on the machines to support ongoing design work." I spoke with one of the CE Tech's yesterday and he said SS4 will open and edit the older versions by importing the individual files. So I know that the newer versions are backwards compatible. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated?

Bottom line, will SS4 of MS and IR install and work simultaneously with SS3 of MS and IR?

[CR] [OR] Allow users to base a derived element on a simple element within a complex element

I have a complex element that I want to drop complex on, because I'm about to form a new complex element that includes these elements, but I don't want a complex element that includes another complex element which finally comprises simpler elements. So I drop complex. The unfortunate thing is, now an element that is derived from that complex element is broken. So I undo that operation and then see if I can change the reference to one of the simple elements. I find that it is impossible to select a simple element within a complex element.

I guess the workaround is to set an entirely different element to replace it, then drop complex, then switch it back.

Geopak SS4 .872.

As I understand it, InRoads Ss2 with MicroStation can coexist with InRoads Ss3 or Ss4 on the same PC, but when it comes to InRoads Ss3 and Ss4, it is one or the other. These newer InRoads are very tightly integrated with MicroStation and this prevents multiple versions from being possible.

The download page, which you are probably familiar with: communities.bentley.com/.../selectservices_online_downloads

When you've found your product listed (in your case, InRoads), click "All Downloads". Click the link under the "Product Download" column of the table. A window comes up that links to the ReadMe. In your case (.615), it links to ftp.bentley.com/.../readme_InRoads.htm. FAQ and the first question (which gives you the answer) is at ftp.bentley.com/.../faq.htm.

Question: What CAD platforms does Bentley InRoads Group V8i (SELECTseries 2) support?

Answer: The Bentley InRoads Group V8i (SELECTseries 2) supports Bentley MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 3), Bentley MicroStation V8i (SELECTseries 2), AutoCAD 2008 32 bit, AutoCAD 2009 32 bit, AutoCAD 2010 32 bit, AutoCAD 2011 32 bit AutoCAD 2012 32 bit.

Sadly it has no further detail, but I would guess that it supports any version of Microstation that can be called SS2 or SS3.

If you look on our Software Fulfillment Download page, Select Brand InRoads, Select Language, Under InRoads All Downloads you will see the version of InRoads you are looking for. If you check on the box in front of that version it will expand out to give you MicroStation and the Pre-Req's required to work with that version of InRoads. You will want to install all three starting with Pre-Req's, MS then IR.

Good Afternoon,

I would like to install ir081107615.  I do have the application package, but what I need to know is if there are any prerequisites needed?  If so, what are they and where can I get them?

Thank you in advance.

A Bentley coder will have to explain the programmatic differences between those two constraint types... and in cases like this I subscribe to this philosophy ... “Don’t try to make the software something that it is not; understand how it reacts; …and just let it be.” - The Zen Dude

I tried 'Line Between Points' - used Tangent snap to start, and then Perpendicular, and got the result shown below. I used PowerCivil 8.11.9.845 in this test. Adjusting the radii of either of the two elements being connected amends the middle element as necessary.

[OR] How to construct a line perpendicular to one alignment and tangent to another alignment?

With Microstation tools we can easily construct a line perpendicular to one alignment and tangent to another with the use of the usual snap modes.

With OpenRoads tools, I'm not seeing the same functionality; many of the snaps--especially tangent and perpendicular snaps--disappear. That's when trying to do this using Line From Element and that sort of tool.

When trying with the Line Between Points tool, I can do a perpendicular snap to one element and I get expected results, and I can even activate the tangent snap, but it won't actually snap to anything. Vice versa is true: when I do the tangent snap first, I can activate the perpendicular snap but it won't snap to anything.

Yes. And understanding (or alternatively, a fix) is exactly what I'm looking for. As evident in the last line of my original post.
