It sounds like the rules are still active even after dropping it. I think its the rules that are making both sides move when you try to move a point. Can you drop all the rules or do you still need them?

It does sound like the rules are still active even after dropping it, but I know of no reason that an element that has blue squares for handles should move along with any vertex on any other element....
