I agree 100% Adam. The shaping tools are useless in SS4, I find myself going back to the legacy tools all of the time just to run paving grades.
The geometry tools have huge issues. Since the Bentley folks basically used the inroads corridor functionality, why couldn't they have ported over the vertical alignment tools to be able to input into a flex table the grades, vpi's curve data, etc. Same thing with alignments.
Civil3d offers the same functionality with xrefed terrains, alignments, profiles, etc. So you can work on different sections. It even offers dynamic cross section updating, imagine that! I've basically gotten to the point where I create alignments and profiles in one dgn, and then immediately export them to landxml as a backup.
