The Keyboard Position Mapping that you are describing has been replaced with Ribbon Pop-ups and Key Bindings. This allows you to use your keyboard to navigate to your favorite commands, and have them appear directly on your cursor. The shortcuts are customizable based on your preferences. The lag may be due to the amount of commands you are saving through the popups. When I tested it with commands that are delivered, I did not experience a lag.
