This topic has been dealt with briefly in the following post.

The biggest issue I have found is the forced degradation of the survey chains to graphical elements. This can cause big wrinkles downstream. The first image is of the survey chain PRE migration to SS4......
The second is POST migration....
A few issues post migration:
1. Notice the lack of attributes.
2. The data can't be traced back to its origin only the fieldbook.
3. The chain can only be edited graphically. In other words it is no longer constrained to the XYZ vertices collected by the field crew.
For this project I was forced to re-import our firms survey data into the SS4 dgn. Depending on how thorough the crews were and how much post import editing was done will greatly influence the work effort post migration. If the SS3 & SS4 dgn format is a single file deliverable i.e a container file I would have expected a higher level of data integrity during migration. Is there something I missed? Just thought I'd give other survey folks a heads up on what to expect if a client asks you to migrate a project from SS3 to SS4.
