[OR Ss4] Working with a Linked XIN and Component Element Templates

I've watched some videos where some element is assigned a profile and instantly appears as a 3D object.

I have a linked XIN and Component Element templates from that file.

I created my geometry using a style from the linked XIN. The feature in the XIN is defined as both linear and surface. I assigned the feature definition to both the horizontal and the profile elements. What am I missing to have it create the 3D elements?
