TIW files are one of the best methods for getting data into survey. The default RW5 and RAW TIW does not read every type of record as defined by TDS or Carlson. Sometimes you need to tweak a TIW file to get all data read that is supported. I recommend creating a new TIW and adding a new description for it. When a new TIW is added, the description and path to the file is saved in the XIN file. The help file should explain the steps to add or create a new TIW file.
I have been know to do this by manually eciting the XIN and the TIW files, but I've been doing this for a long time. Editing the TIW is pretty easy - editing a XIN is a bit more difficult, but is not rocket science. You just have to have a good editor that has XML related tools and a pretty good understanding of XML rules and syntax.
