Yes. At least, the answer is yes to what you seem to be asking.
Your template's points need not have the same feature definition as the component it belongs to. For example, your shoulder edge point probably belongs to two different components: your shoulder and your side slope. Your pavement edge point probably belongs to your surface asphalt and your shoulder.
My workspace has surface and linear feature definitions where template points (linear elements) and components have the same name, they may have different rules for display and whether a 3D rendering is created as you process the corridor. That might help too.
But I guess all I'm saying is stuff you probably already know.
